A GRADUATE OF USC, HE HAS HAD A LONG HISTORY WITH THE SCTA. HE WAS ELECTED TO THE BOARD IN THE 1960’S AND BECAME PRESIDENT IN 1976. WHILE SERVING, THE CONSTITUTION BY LAWS WERE DRAWN UP AND THE SCTA WAS INCORPORATED BY THE STATE OF SC.

AL ORGANIZED THE SCTA’S FIRST TOURNAMENT DIRECTORS WORKSHOP IN 1978 AND RECRUITED THE PRESIDENT OF THE GEORGIA TENNIS ASSOCIATION THAT HAD JUST PUBLISED THE FIRST TOURNAMENT DIRECTORS MANUAL. AFTER SERVING AS THE PRESIDNET, AL BECAME MEMBER OF THE SCTA BOARD OF DIRECTORS. HE WAS NAMED SOUTH CAROLINIAN OF THE YEAR IN TENNIS IN 1979.

AL WAS AN OFFICER WITH ARGUS LIFE INS., AND WITH THAT, HE MET WITH THE RICHLAND COUNTY RECTRACTION COMMISSION IN 1979 TO FORMULATE THE ARGUS LIFE JUNIOR TENNIS GRAND PRIX. IT HAS RUN CONTINOISLY TO THIS DATE.

AL WAS ALSO A CERTIFIED OFFICIAL AND BEGAN AS A LINE UMPIRE. HE WORKED ON SEVERAL OF THE GRAND MASTERS TOURNAMENTS HELD AT SEABROOK ISLAND. HE WAS A LINE UMPIRE AT THE FAMILY CIRCLE MAGAZINE CUP ON HILTON HEAD ISLAND FOR 15 CONSECUTIVE YEARS.

AL BECAME THE SCTA EXECUTIVE SECRETARY IN 1977. HE HAS SERVED ON THAT POSITION THROUGH 1991.
